A valid national licence is accepted for tourist stays. Dipped headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day on any road, and the alcohol tolerance at the wheel is zero.
Cards are accepted across most of the coast and in Montevideo, and tourists using a foreign card get the VAT refunded on accommodation and restaurants. Bring pesos for duty-free shops, markets and local transport.
Pharmacy sales are restricted to registered residents. Personal use is decriminalised, but buying as a tourist is not allowed.
Vehicle documents, Mercosur insurance (carta verde) and proof of ownership are required at customs. The process usually takes a few minutes at land borders.
Mercosur citizens can enter with a valid national ID; everyone else needs a passport. Minors travelling without both guardians need written authorisation.
Worth it for electronics, perfume and spirits, within your allowance. Beyond the allowance, the difference disappears with import tax on the way back.
Usually not. Emergency care at public hospitals exists, but travel insurance solves consultations, medication and repatriation without the paperwork.
